1. The Definite Article: "The"

  •  “The” is called a definite article and is used to refer to a specific noun that is known to the reader or listener.

  • Example:

    • The book on the table is mine. (A specific book is being referred to).

2. The Indefinite Articles: "A" and "An"

  • Used to refer to a non-specific noun or something mentioned for the first time.

  • "A" is used before words beginning with a consonant sound.

  • "An" is used before words beginning with a vowel sound (a, e, i, o, u).

  • Examples:

    • I saw a dog in the park. (Any dog, not a specific one.)

    • She ate an apple. (Any apple, not a specific one.)

Usage in Sentences

  • Articles come before singular countable nouns.

    • Example: He bought a car.

  • For uncountable or plural nouns, articles may or may not be used depending on context.

    • Example: I need the sugar. (Specific sugar.)

    • Example: We drink water every day. (No article because "water" is uncountable and general.)

  • Use "the" when both the speaker and the listener know the specific noun.

  • Use "a" or "an" for something non-specific or mentioned for the first time.

Using "A" (before words with consonant sounds)

Using "An" (before words with vowel sounds)

  1. I ate an orange for breakfast.

  2. He is reading an interesting article.

  3. She wants to be an artist someday.

Using "The" (for specific or known nouns)

  2. Please hand me the book on the table.

  3. They visited the Eiffel Tower during their trip to Paris.

Combining Examples

  1. I saw a bird. The bird was building a nest.

I saw a dog playing with an orange ball in the park.

She bought a dress and an elegant scarf from the store.
