 Conversion of Exclamatory Sentences from Direct Speech to Indirect Speech

Examples

The reporting verb is changed to another verb, such as exclaimed with joy, sorrow, surprise, anger, admiration, etc.


Said-------->exclaimed

Said will be change into exclaimed and the the expression will be use (joy, sorrow, etc.)


conjunction ‘that’ is used.


The structure of direct speech is changed from exclamatory form to assertive form.

exclamatory -->assertive 

Direct: She said, ”What a beautiful flower that is!”

Indirect: She exclaimed with admiration that it was a beautiful flower.


Direct: He said, ”Alas! We have lost the match.”

Indirect: He exclaimed with sorrow that they had lost the match.


  1. Direct: She said, "Hurrah! We won the lottery!"
    Indirect: She exclaimed with joy that they had won the lottery.

  2. Direct: He said, "Oh no! I lost my passport!"
    Indirect: He exclaimed with regret that he had lost his passport.

  3. Direct: They said, "Wow! This painting is stunning!"
    Indirect: They exclaimed with admiration that the painting was stunning.

  4. Direct: The child said, "Oh! I can’t find my mother!"
    Indirect: The child exclaimed in panic that he couldn’t find his mother.

  5. Direct: She said, "How beautiful the sunset is!"
    Indirect: She exclaimed with wonder that the sunset was beautiful.

  6. Direct: He said, "What a terrible mistake I made!"
    Indirect: He exclaimed with frustration that he had made a terrible mistake.

  7. Direct: They said, "Fantastic! Our team scored the winning goal!"
    Indirect: They cheered by saying that their team had scored the winning goal.

  8. Direct: The teacher said, "Well done! You solved the problem correctly!"
    Indirect: The teacher applauded him by saying that he had solved the problem correctly.

  9. Direct: She said, "Alas! The old man has passed away."
    Indirect: She exclaimed with sorrow that the old man had passed away.

  10. Direct: He said, "What an amazing performance!"
    Indirect: He exclaimed with admiration that it had been an amazing performance.

  11. Direct: She said, "How silly I was to trust him!"
    Indirect: She exclaimed with regret that she had been silly to trust him.

  12. Direct: The little boy said, "Oh! I forgot my lunchbox at home."
    Indirect: The little boy said in disappointment that he had forgotten his lunchbox at home.

  13. Direct: He said, "Wow! You look stunning in that dress!"
    Indirect: He said in awe that she looked stunning in that dress.

  14. Direct: The coach said, "Bravo! That was an excellent shot!"
    Indirect: The coach exclaimed with praise that it was an excellent shot.

  15. Direct: The mother said, "Be careful! The road is slippery!"
    Indirect: The mother said with concern that the road was slippery.
