Types of Interjections

Definition:

 An interjection is a word or short expression that expresses a sudden feeling, emotion, reaction, or response. It is usually followed by an exclamation mark (!).

1. Interjections of Joy

Definition: Words used to express happiness, delight, or excitement.

• Hurrah! We have won the match.

• Yay! We are going on a picnic.

• Hurray! Our team has reached the final.

• Wow! This is wonderful news.

• Woohoo! We have finished our work.

2. Interjections of Sorrow

Definition: Words used to express sadness, grief, or regret.

• Alas! He has lost his beautiful cat.

• Oh! I am very sorry to hear that.

• Ah! What a sad story!

• Alas! We could not save the old building.

• Oh no! She has missed the train.

3. Interjections of Surprise

Definition: Words used to express sudden surprise or astonishment.

• Wow! What a beautiful house!

• Oh! You are here already.

• Goodness! What a huge cake!

• Gosh! I didn't expect to see you here.

• What! You have finished the whole book?

4. Interjections of Approval or Praise

Definition: Words used to express appreciation, admiration, or approval.

• Bravo! You performed very well.

• Excellent! You have done a great job.

• Well done! You answered all the questions correctly.

• Wonderful! Your presentation was excellent.

• Great! You have solved the problem.

5. Interjections of Pain

Definition: Words used to express physical 

or emotional pain.

• Ouch! My finger hurts.

• Ow! That was painful.

• Ah! My leg is hurting.

• Oh! I have hurt my hand.

• Ouch! The needle hurt me.

• Ouch! I have a terrible headache.

• Oh! My headache is getting worse.

• Ah! This headache is unbearable.

• Ouch! I have a severe backache.

• Oh no! My backache has returned.

• Ah! My back is really sore.

• Ouch! My legs are sore after the exercise.

6. Interjections of Greeting

Definition: Words used to greet or welcome someone.

• Hello! How are you?

• Hi! Nice to meet you.

• Hey! How have you been?

• Welcome! We are happy to see you.

• Good morning! How are you today?

7. Interjections of Attention

Definition: Words used to attract someone's attention.

• Hey! Come here.

• Listen! I have something important to tell you.

• Look! There is a bird on the roof.

• Hush! The baby is sleeping.

• Attention! The principal is coming.

8. Interjections of Disgust

Definition: Words used to express strong dislike or disgust.

• Yuck! This milk tastes awful.

• Ugh! What a terrible smell!

• Eww! There is something rotten here.

• Fie! What a shameful act!

• Yuck! I don't want to eat this.

9. Interjections of Fear or Alarm

Definition: Words used to express fear, danger, or sudden alarm.

• Help! Someone is drowning.

10. Interjections of Doubt or Hesitation

Definition: Words used to express uncertainty, hesitation, or difficulty in making a decision.

• Hmm! I need to think about it.

• Er! I am not sure about that.

• Um! Let me check my answer.

• Well! I don't know what to say.

• Hmm! This question is difficult.

11. Interjections of Agreement

Definition: Words used to express agreement, acceptance, or confirmation.

• Yes! I completely agree with you.

• Indeed! You are absolutely right.

• Certainly! I will help you.

• Exactly! That is what I mean.

• Absolutely! Your answer is correct.

12. Interjections of Relief

Definition: Words used to express relief after fear,

 worry, pain, or difficulty has ended.

• Phew! We finally completed the work.

• Ah! The examination is over.

• Thank goodness! Everyone is safe.

• Whew! That was a difficult journey.

• Oh! I am glad you are safe.
