Types of Pronouns


  Types of Pronouns:

1. Personal Pronouns

Refer to specific people or things.

Subject: I, you, he, she, it, we, they

Object: me, you, him, her, it, us, them

1. First-Person Pronouns

The speaker refers to himself/herself or a

 group including the speaker.

Singular:

I, me, my, mine, myself

Plural:

we, us, our, ours

ourselves

Examples:

I am a teacher.

The principal called me.

We are ready.

This book is mine.

We enjoyed ourselves.

1. Second-Person Pronouns

The speaker refers to the person or people being 

spoken to.

Singular and Plural:

you, your, yours, yourself, yourselves

Examples:

You are very hardworking.

I called you yesterday.

Is this book yours?

Take care of yourself.

You should prepare yourselves for the test.

1.Third-Person Pronouns

The speaker refers to someone or something being spoken about.

Singular:

he, him, his, himself

she, her, hers, herself

it, its, itself

Plural:

they, them, their, theirs, themselves

Examples:

He is my brother.

I met her yesterday.

This pen is his.

The cat hurt itself.

They completed their work.

1. I am a teacher.

First Person

Singular:

2. Possessive Pronouns

Pronouns that show ownership or

possession.

Examples: 

1. This book is mine.

2. That car is yours.

3. The blue bag is hers.

4. This house is ours.

5. Those seats are theirs.

3. Reflexive Pronouns

Pronouns that refer back to the

 subject of the sentence.

Examples:

1. I hurt myself.

2. She prepared herself for the interview.

3. He introduced himself to the class.

4. We enjoyed ourselves at the picnic.

5. They blamed themselves for the mistake.

4. Intensive (Emphatic) Pronouns

Intensive (Emphatic) Pronouns used to emphasize

 a noun or pronoun.

Examples 

1. I myself checked the papers.

2. The principal herself addressed the students.

3. He himself repaired the computer.

4. We ourselves organized the event.

5. The students themselves decorated the classroom.

5. Demonstrative Pronouns

Demonstrative Pronouns used to point out specific people or things.

Examples 

1. This is my book.

2. That is your chair.

3. These are my shoes.

4. Those are beautiful flowers.

5. This is what I wanted.

6. Interrogative Pronouns

Interrogative Pronouns used to ask 

questions.

Examples 

1. Who is at the door?

2. Whom did you meet?

3. Whose is this pen?

4. Which do you prefer?

5. What happened here?

7. Relative Pronouns

Relative Pronouns that introduce a relative clause

 and relate it to a noun or pronoun.

Examples

1. The girl who won the race is my sister.

2. The man whom I met was a doctor.

3. The student whose book was lost came

       to me.

1. This is the house which Jack built.

2. I like the story that you told me.

8. Indefinite Pronouns

Indefinite Pronouns that refer to people or things without specifying exactly who or what they are.

Examples 

1. Someone is waiting outside.

2. Everyone enjoyed the lesson.

3. Nobody knew the answer.

4. Several were absent today.

5. Many have applied for the job.

9. Distributive Pronouns

Distributive Pronouns that refer to members 

of a group individually.

Examples 

1. Each of the students received a book.

2. Each has a different opinion.

3. Either of the two answers is correct.

4. Neither of the boys was ready.

5. Each of them was given a certificate.

10. Reciprocal Pronouns

Reciprocal Pronouns that express a mutual

 relationship or action between two or more people.

Examples 

1. The two friends helped each other.

2. The children looked at one another.

3. The brothers respect each other.

4. The players congratulated one another.

5. We should support each other.

11. Exclamatory Pronouns

Exclamatory Pronouns used to express strong feelings 

or emotions in an exclamation.

Examples 

1. What a beautiful painting!

2. What an amazing performance!

3. What a wonderful idea!

4. What a beautiful day!

5. What a talented student!

12. Dummy (Expletive) Pronouns

Dummy (Expletive) Pronouns that have no specific person or thing as their referent but

are used to complete the grammatical 

structure of a sentence.

Examples 

1. It is raining.

2. It is very cold today.

3. It is difficult to solve this problem.

4. There is a book on the table.

5. There are many students in the classroom.
